I suspect it’s … kind of a waste of time?
I began blogging around 2009, for no real reason except I had a lot of time on my hands and nothing much I could afford to do with it. Blogging led to self-publishing, since being online more meant I became aware of the new platform arising at Amazon, which then meant thinking “what’s the worst that could happen" and throwing my master’s thesis up. Nothing bad happened! I even sold a copy or two!
Anyway, I kept blogging, and I started writing fiction. Lots of it. I’ve been self-publishing since 2012 and, of course, now have a ‘legit’ publishing relationship with JMS Books LLC.
This particular website was created in 2018, and I’ve mostly used it to post about my work, though I did go down a political-governmental rabbit hole around the beginning of this year. I don’t use it to sell work, though, and I don’t leverage it for promotion the way many indie authors do. Because I already have a full-time job.
This site is fairly inexpensive, because I don’t use the pricey marketing or sales tools. It’s relatively easy to update, though there are content blocks that seem to be uneditable, which is annoying. The most annoying part about it is signing on. That shouldn’t be the case.
I get that Squarespace wants to make it harder for hackers to mess with content creators, and I appreciate that, but they are doing it wrong. A verification code sent to my email address can take so long to arrive that it’s timed out before I get a chance to enter it. This has happened numerous times, including this morning, which is why I’m ranting about this now instead of doing what I wanted to get on the blog to do.
I will shortly go do what I meant to do, and then I’ll go looking for a way to get the goddamned verification code by text, because that works for literally EVERY OTHER THING I need to verify, and I don’t understand why it’s not the fucking default for this site.
