Three important things about MAKE ME:
The stars of the story are Harry Sterling (an attorney) and Xi Duarte (a physical therapist).
Xi’s name is pronounced ‘Chi.’
It’s about finding a way to get what you need without hurting yourself (or anybody else).
A lot of my things start when I find myself thinking of a particular scene. I’m always writing, so most of the time the scene that pops into my head is something that goes in a work-in-progress. But - often enough to call it a pattern - it’s something that has nothing (or at least nothing obvious) to do with the works-in-progress. (And that’s a whole ‘nother bag of tricks. I used to work on one thing at a time. At present there are six things at various stages of ‘first draft,’ one in beta draft, and five in pre-publication review. Send help.)
Anyway, I started writing this one in February, and I distinctly remember that I was standing on the traffic island under my train stop, waiting for the express bus, mostly zoning out, when the opening scene loaded. That is honestly what it feels like sometimes, as if the thing is already written and it simply appears on my mental page.
I’ve come a long way from 2012, when I started writing these things. There is no ‘first draft publication’ anymore. After several rounds of working through the whole series to fix/improve all the backlist, I am now taking the time to get them to a point that lives up to the best things I’ve written before I launch. Which is why this novella was completed in March, but is only now seeing the light of day.

Xi is a new character. Harry, on the other hand, is Victor Garcia’s attorney. Victor, as you may recall, is one of the heroes of three L.A. Stories novels (beginning with EXPOSURE) and has a notable presence elsewhere. Harry also makes a cameo appearance in TAKE A NOTE. This story takes place between November 2014 and February 2016 in story-universe time. It provides an outside look at what’s happening with Victor and his lover Andy. It is mostly, however, about a pair of men with different kinds of damage who love each other in spite of it.
