I used to think of you as one of the Good Guys. You’re the one who issued same-sex marriage licenses in 2004 and who stood behind marriage equality until the US Supreme Court finally ruled that denying marriage equality was a form of illegal discrimination.
And yet, like so many other politicians pandering to and appeasing the Chaos Goblin Administration – which swept in on a platform designed and built by the Heritage Foundation, paid for by a cabal of billionaires (all of whom, coincidentally, stood to profit from federal contracts and tax breaks promised by DJT.2), and now morphing into a pro-Russia, anti-human rights toxic swamp – you’ve decided to add your thumb to the scale on the side against equality.
You decided to use your office to add another voice in favor of discrimination.
MAGA says LGBTQIA+ people don’t actually deserve the freedom to be themselves, to participate freely in society, to obtain whatever medical care other people are entitled to. MAGA says LGBTQIA+ children and adolescents don’t actually deserve access to all the same activities and resources as other children and adolescents.
Maybe you thought you were just being open-minded with your MAGA podcast guest.
I never thought that Gavin Newsom would join the ranks of spineless political weasels, throwing the most fragile, most at-risk, most attacked minority in the country under the bus.
For what? Do you really think there’s some political advantage to be gained here? If you’re contemplating a presidential campaign, do you really think the friends, families, and allies of the people you’ve just said should be discriminated against won’t remember?
You’re going to try to weasel out of this; you’ll walk it back, saying you meant trans athletes in college shouldn’t be allowed to compete. But everybody knows – it’s become abundantly clear, as states pass laws forbidding parents to obtain hormone therapy for their gender-dysphoric minor children while at the same time allowing parents to get the same medications for their aspiring-athlete cisgender minor children – that the goal of DJT.2, his cronies and his bootlickers, is denying the existence of trans people, and it starts at birth.
You said that a trans woman competing in a women’s college track and field event was “deeply unfair.”
On Donors Choose, there are presently over 7000 requests for funding from California schools. Public schools are a public good; teachers shouldn’t have to crowd-fund their classrooms. That’s deeply unfair. Plus:
The California lottery, which despite its marketing as a source of funds for public schools, only contributes about $200 per student.
The Local Control Funding Formula, which somehow still fails to ensure that every student in the California public schools has the same resources, activities, and opportunities.
K-12 public schools which assemble their sports teams based on genitalia, rather than height or weight.
What’s deeply unfair is kicking people when they’re down. Putting another foot on their necks to make sure they can’t stand up. And giving people motivated by nothing but hate – because there is no legitimate government interest in regulating who plays which sport – another stick to beat people with.
The NCAA admitted that of its roughly 500,000 athletes, maybe 10 identified as transgender. We’ll never know how many gender-nonconforming K-12 students might have become college athletes, because under DJT.2 they can’t even have an affinity group on campus.
Peoples’ rights are being trampled here. That’s deeply unfair.
You said your podcast was a place to talk to people you disagree with. Then you turned around and agreed with one of the worst.
We’ll remember this, Gavin.
